Chacaltaya to Huayna Potosí – All One Day

At around 7.30 am you will be picked up from your hostel/hotel.

The 2 hour drive passes through El Alto and onto the Altiplano where you start to see the Andean landscape and mountain ranges. We arrive at Chacaltaya ski refuge (5200 m) spend some time there to take in the stunning scenery.

From the refuge we will climb up to the first peak of Chacaltaya (5300 m) and see what used to be the world’s highest commercial ski area. Unfortunately now the glacier has receded so much due to global warming there is very little skiing possible but the views are still worth the effort.

There is a second peak we head to before making a descent to the left side and down towards the Zongo valley.
Once into the valley we will pass along llama pasture and the Zongo dam where there is a hydroelectric plant that supplies electricity to La Paz.

All this time we will be walking towards the majestic figure of Huayna Potosi mountain standing at 6088 m. Some distance after the dam we will walk up the trail to the Huayna Potosi refuge where we will rest to savor the views and meet with our return transport back to La Paz.

You should arrive back to La Paz around 5/6pm (depending on your trekking speed and traffic).

If you wish to hire an English-speaking guide there is an additional cost – please see below. An English-speaking guide is not always available and in case we cannot confirm it, we will obviously refund you the extra cost you paid. The longer the notice you give us, the more likely it will be that we can confirm the English-speaking guide. If you don’t want to go on the trek unless you have an English-speaking guide, you must let us know in the Further Details section, otherwise if it is not available, we will still confirm the tour with a Spanish-speaking guide. Price is per person.

If you are just one person and want to book you can either place your booking as a private single person tour for additional cost by checking the private tour box when filling out the booking form.
