Description

Dare to ascend to 5300m above sea level for a stunning view of the Cordillera Real from one of the best known peaks of the Tuni Condoriri Massif, the Pico Austria.

No special equipment is required, just good hiking boots, warm, layered clothing, sun, wind and rain protection and a passion for high mountain landscapes.

We reach the trekking start point (4300m) after a 1.5 hour journey from La Paz, passing through El Alto and the vast Altiplano.

As we begin to walk, the trail rises slowly to the beautiful, turquoise Chiar Khota Lake (4900m), at the base of enormous glaciated peaks.

After a picnic lunch and some well-deserved rest (and oxygen!) we journey on, the peak awaits!

1 Day ■Full Day

Around 7.00 am, you will be picked up from your lodging. The 2-hour in car journey takes you through El Alto and onto the Altiplano, where you begin to witness the breathtaking Andean scenery and mountain ranges.

We reach a place called La Rinconada (4400 mts) and make preparations for the trek. Immediately, you will be treated to awe-inspiring mountain vistas. The path veers northward and traverses llama pastures towards the Condoriri range. The hike is gentle and gradually gains altitude.

We will continue along the trail until we reach Laguna Chiarkhota (4600mts), where you can enjoy a well-deserved break and have lunch surrounded by magnificent snow-capped peaks. The journey to this point should take approximately 1 to 2 hours. After lunch, we begin ascending towards Paso Austria (5000 mts), which takes about 2.5 hours.

From there, we embark on the trail leading to Pico Austria, steadily climbing and winding until we reach a ridge that guides us to the summit. The views from the top encompass the Condoriri Range and, on clear days, extend across to Huayna Potosi and Lake Titicaca.

If reaching the peak is not feasible, we will halt at Paso Austria and relish the view from there. It takes an additional 30 minutes from Paso Austria to reach the peak.

Following a well-deserved rest, we commence the descent, passing by Laguna Chiarkhota on the opposite side this time. You should arrive back in La Paz around 18.00 / 19.00 (depending on your trekking speed and traffic).
