Our Palca Canyon day-trip sets out from La Paz in the morning by private taxi and takes you to the farming village of Uni where you have excellent views of Illimani Mountain (and you realize that it is still very far away and must be massive!) and the bizarre and enormous sand castle-like formations of the Valle de las Animas or Spirit Valley.
From Uni you begin a leisurely down-hill walk through farming villages and their fields as you approach the striking red rock walls of the canyon.
You then walk through the canyon with dizzying views of the colorful and severe formations from the riverbed.
Once you are through the canyon, the hike continues towards the village of Palca with a stop by the river for a delicious picnic lunch.
After lunch, you head on to Palca where your vehicle and driver will be waiting for you to take you back to La Paz.
